Let's keep the spirit of poetry going! Here's a fun project for you to try.LET’S CREATE A COMMUNITY POEM!Let’s write a poem together, folks. National Poetry Month has ended, but poetry hasn’t, right? I’ve done a lot of work with NPR and PBS over the years and it’s been so rewarding. So, let us celebrate Mister Rogers and NewsHour and All Things Considered and Fresh Air and Work it out Wombats and the role public media plays in making our communities and our country better for everyone. That’s right, we are going to create a community poem about the importance of art and storytelling and civic discourse in our democracy, about what public media does best: inspire and engage citizens to connect through a neighborhood expression of care. I invite you to submit an original poem, or meaningful thought or phrase (10-30 lines max) — about how public media makes a difference in your life, in our world. Borrowing from Fred Rogers’ testimony before the Senate Subcommittee on Communications, your submission should begin with, or include somewhere in the poem, the line: "You've made this day..."I will then select lines from multiple submissions and combine them into one single community poem. The final poem, representing the combined work of multiple contributors across the United States, will be shared later this month. (Teachers, this will be a cool activity for your class as well).
