"Invisible Monuments" Author Event with Howard Mansfield

November 14, 2026 2:00 pm-4:00 pm

We are pleased to host award-winning author Howard Mansfield, who writes about architecture, preservation, and history in his quest to understand the soul of American places. He will be signing and discussing his newest book Invisible Monuments: Tribute, Memory, and the Summoning of the Past. The event is free and open to the public. Signed copies will be available for purchase. For more information or to RSVP, call 508-949-6232. Book description: We live in an era of monument building, yet we don’t look at most of the monuments and memorials around us. They disappear from view. Think of all the mute memorials you may pass in a week that are unseen, a blurred background to your daily commute: the green-mottled great man on his horse, hosting only pigeons; the curious obelisk looking like a stunted Washington Monument; the historical marker crowded with so many words it looks like a warning label written by a cadre of liability lawyers. So much narrative left out in the weather, so much storytelling that has lost its way. Any monument that we stand before asks something of us. Think of monuments as the first part of a call and response, as in music, as in worship. We bring our sense of history to the present, otherwise the granite/marble/limestone/bronze before us will be mute. Some monuments do elicit a strong emotional response even after many decades. Why do these work, when others don’t? Howard Mansfield sifts through the commonplace and the forgotten to discover stories that tell us about ourselves and our place in the world. He writes about history, architecture, and preservation. He is the author of a dozen books, including The Bones of the Earth, The Same Ax Twice, Chasing Eden, Dwelling in Possibility: Searching for the Soul of Shelter, and In the Memory House which The New York Times called “a wise and beautiful book.”

A Thousand Miles From Home Author Event with Ed Londergan

December 5, 2026 1:00-3:00 PM

Join us in welcoming back author Ed Londergan and his contemporary fiction novel about family, redemption, reconciliation, and the sometimes difficult journey home. Getting on the wrong bus changed Sam Parker’s life. He had walked away from his family twelve years earlier, trying to find his place in the world. His wanderings uncovered things he hoped to find and others he wanted to forget. Surrendering to his demons brings him to rock bottom, with nowhere to go but up. After falling in love with the woman who saved him, an overpowering dream compels him to finish his journey. Knowing he might never see her again, it was heartbreaking when he had to leave her. When he reaches his destination, the startling news awaiting him turns his life upside down and leads to a future he could never have imagined, including helping his estranged brother fulfill a promise neither of them wants to keep. Ed will talk about the inspiration for the novel, creating Sam's journey, using Massachusetts as a setting, and writing about family, estrangement, redemption, reconciliation, and forgiveness. This free event will also include a short reading, audience Q&A, and a book signing.

Lizzie Borden & the Family Curse Author Talk & Signing with Sam Baltrusis

December 6, 2026 1:00-3:00 PM

The infamous 1892 murders of Andrew and Abby Borden have captivated New Englanders for more than one hundred years. But the story doesn’t end in Fall River. Far beyond the locked doors of the Borden household, there is a wider web of people, places, and histories connected to the case. By weaving these parallel tales of crime, gender, and societal upheaval into the central narrative, local author Sam Baltrusis takes a deep dive into the ultimate whodunit―placing Lizzie’s story within a broader historical and cultural context of rumors, power, and the shifting expectations of women in American society. Sam Baltrusis is a Boston-based author who has been featured on the Travel Channel’s A Haunting and The Curse of Lizzie Borden. He is the author of two dozen paranormal-themed books, including Ghosts of Salem and Related to Evil. His latest True Crime book from The History Press/Arcadia, Lizzie Borden & the Family Curse, was released in October 2026.
