SUMMARY:Curt Curtin Releases New Poetry Collection for Older Children
DESCRIPTION:Curt Curtin and his wife\, Dee O’Connor\, will read from his latest collection\, So Much Depends On Where You Live\, which is both playful and deeply serious. Targeted to young readers in their teens and tweens\, the collection includes the “wit\, inventive rhyme schemes\, and fun wordplay” that characterized his previous collection for younger children\, but this new work includes challenging subject matter more appropriate for older children. The opening section entices the reader with images of home\, presenting warm memories in a diversity of settings ranging from a nine-story apartment to a mud hut in the Sahel. The second section moves the reader inward through metaphors of closets and themes of loss\, bullying\, domestic violence and foster care. The final section zooms out to take in the universe\, lightening the mood again with images from earth and beyond.  \nA brief open mic will start at 2 p.m. followed by the featured reading. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. A bilingual selection of the poems (Spanish and English) is currently in development for distribution within schools and other settings. Teen and pre-teen readers are highly encouraged to attend. \nFor more information or to reserve a seat or sign up for the open mic (space is limited)\, call 508-949-6232 or email deb@bookloversgourmet.com. \nCurtin has won several awards for poetry including the Worcester County Poetry Association’s Frank O’Hara Award (2010) and the Connecticut Poetry Society’s annual contest (2019). He has twice been named a Pushcart Prize nominee. His poetry has been published in a variety of journals and anthologies\, three chapbooks and three other full-length poetry collections. \nFor more information about the author\, visit curtcurtinpoet.com

SUMMARY:Healing Wisdom of Dreams author event with Kathleen Webster O'Malley
DESCRIPTION:Come meet Kathleen Webster O’Malley\, author of The Healing Wisdom of Dreams\, published in October 2022 by Hay House\, Inc. \nThe event is free and open to the public. For more information call 508-949-6232 or email deb@bookloversgourmet.com. \nSigned copies will be available for purchase and may also be pre-ordered by contacting the store. \nAbout The Healing Wisdom of Dreams\nA guide to trusting in the wisdom of our nightly visions and describing how engaging with our dream world can give us a sense of direction\, help us to heal current and past hurts\, including pre-birth trauma. \nWe can analyze and interpret our dreams\, but we can do so much more: when we understand and engage with our dreams\, we are able to tap into a special\, deeper kind of healing. The process of healing is not about putting the same pieces back together; rather\, it is about reclaiming what is already within us that could never be broken\, the essence of who we are as individuals and as interconnected parts of a greater whole. In THE HEALING WISDOM OF DREAMS\, health and wellness practitioner Kathleen Webster O’Malley gently guides us through the process of using our dreams to heal unwanted patterns and live more authentically. \nShe provides specific tools for enhancing dream recall\, including dream journaling\, and brings in the practices of dream incubation–how to ask our dream a question and receive and interpret an answer–lucid dreaming\, and Tibetan dream yoga practices. Nightmares are inevitable when we start to dive deeper into our vulnerabilities and traumas\, and O’Malley discusses how to re-vision them as urgent messages that serve to deliver profound realizations. She explores the more mystical side of dreaming: visions from ancestors and spirit guides\, animal guides\, and archetypes that appear in our dreams. Finally\, she encourages us to grant ourselves permission to be playful in our dreams\, to envision ourselves as archeologists unearthing our hidden gifts. \n  \nKathleen Webster O’Malley serves as a health and wellness practitioner\, combining more than 20 years of chiropractic with other healing modalities that emphasize alignment to the body’s inherent wisdom. A dream enthusiast since childhood\, she encourages her patients and wellness clients to look to their dreams as a source of guidance\, inspiration\, and healing. She is a 2020 recipient of the Visioneers Personal Achievement Award for her contributions to community well-being. The Visioneers is a global community of change-makers. Kathleen’s mission is to inspire greater compassion and encourage others to align with their innermost wisdom to live with greater integrity\, intention\, and purpose. Kathleen grew up in the Caribbean\, among three island nations and currently makes her home in central Massachusetts. SUMMARY:Walking Through the Woods on a Foggy Day in December-Photo Show
DESCRIPTION:View the ethereal photographs of Bettie Carlson December 1st-31st in our cafe gallery. \nA public meet the artist reception will take place on Sunday\, December 11th\, 1-3 p.m. \nArtist’s Statement: Winter\, the time when all the leaves have fallen from the trees and the flowers have died and all the colors have gone from the land. Or have they?? Is it just that the colors are more subtle than in the warmer months? Not everything is dead. Most are just waiting for springtime when they can rise again. But on a foggy day in December\, I discovered plenty of color – and some fascinating shapes in the decaying wood and leaves that I might not have noticed with the distractions of all that summertime color.  And the fog created a veil to embrace it all.

While planning the funeral arrangements for his beloved mother\, Raymond must interact with his two sisters; one\, a hard charging bank executive\, who scares Raymond\, the other\, a Hollywood scriptwriter more interested in having a good time than mourning their mother’s death. \nFrom being locked out of his apartment in a thunderstorm – clad only in his underwear\, learning about the effects of drinking too much alcohol\, being wrongfully accused of attempted suicide\, and finally gaining the interest of a beautiful lady; Raymond manages to muddle through it all. Staying true to himself\, discovering real friendship and much more in this darkly humorous tale. \nAuthor bio: Besides Carlo’s latest novel\, In a Borrowed Suit\, he has also written these other novels Lavender Skies\, If You See Your Father\, Shoot Him\, and I am the Moon. In recent years he has returned to writing poetry\, with his most recent work published in the Lowell Review and two new poems will be published in the Spring of 2023 in the Evening Street Review. Carlo retired as a school psychologist for the Worcester Public Schools in 2013. He continues as an adjunct faculty member at Quinsigamond Community College teaching Sociology classes.

SUMMARY:"Lights and Icons: A Study in Acrylics"-Paintings by Jim Wilton
DESCRIPTION:Booklovers’ Gourmet is pleased to present “Lights and Icons: A Study in Acrylics”\, paintings by Jim Wilton on view and for sale January 6th-31st\, 2023. \nThe show can be viewed during regular business hours\, Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5 pm\, Wednesday 10am-6pm in the cafe gallery. \nA public reception with the artist will take place on Saturday\, January 7th\, 2-4 pm. \nFor more information call 508-949-6232 or email deb@bookloversgourmet.com. \nArtist’s Statement: “I’ve been photographing and painting for years\, in fact all my life. I’m mostly self taught other than my elementary and high school. I have photographed  lighthouses as well as other subjects for inspiration for my art. These beautiful locations have inspired me to seek more outdoor locations as well as other subject matter. \n  \nI spent many years painting portraits but have switched it up to trying lighthouses after a hiatus to raise children but also found myself returning to portraits. I began photography of outdoor scenes and wildlife in 2008 after finding digital photography\, making it more accessible. A few years ago I began painting again after a friend painted from one of my photos thus inspiring me to try again. I haven’t stopped but also got into crafts such as seashell jewelry boxes\, Christmas trees and lighthouses. I hope folks enjoy my work as much as I enjoyed painting it.”

Retiring in 2016\, I have had the time to pursue my interests in art\, music\, dance and photography.  \nMany of the paintings that I create are based on my photographs or the photographs by friends with their permission.  Artist\, Elaine Griffith\, (now\, Artist\, Janice Legare ) taught classes at Holden Senior Center in acrylic painting which I started in October 2017.  Since then\, I have exhibited in various places in Central MA. I started Art Classes with Bill Griffiths at the Worcester Art Museum in 2018\, which brought me to a new level as an artist.  He has taught in all mediums and students work in the medium of their choosing.  I have exhibited at the Museum’s Adult Student Art Exhibit and at Arts Worcester.  In 2018\, I started watercolor classes with Charlie Grey in Rutland\, MA.\, a local well-known artist who has been instrumental in improving my watercolor technique. In July 2021. I participated in an intense workshop under the direction of Artists Mimi Johnson and Mark Hayden in multiple art forms. I am also a musician and singer and have sung in choruses and churches in Greater Boston.  I studied voice with the late Pauline Maher of Lynn\, MA. The Pandemic in 2020 cut into my exhibition time.  Booklovers’ Gourmet in Webster\, MA. was my first exhibit of 2020 and in December 2021.  Recently\, I have exhibited at the Gale Free Library and 122 Diner in Holden\, and The Pearle L. Crawford Library in Dudley.

SUMMARY:Suspense Author Stephen Amidon visit
DESCRIPTION:As part of our 28th Anniversary celebration\, we are excited to be hosting national suspense author Stephen Amidon! He will be signing and discussing his latest novel Locust Lane\, published by Celedon Books in January 2023. The event is free and open to the public and signed copies of Locust Lane\, as well as his other books\, will be available for purchase. \nCall 508-949-6232 for more information or email deb@bookloversgourmet.com. \nFor fans of Mystic River by Dennis Lehane and Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng\, Stephen Amidon’s Locust Lane is a taut and utterly propulsive story about the search for justice and the fault lines of power and influence in a seemingly idyllic town. Can anyone be trusted? \nOn the surface\, Emerson\, Massachusetts\, is just like any other affluent New England suburb. But when a young woman is found dead in the nicest part of town\, the powerful neighbors close ranks to keep their families safe. In this searing novel\, Eden Perry’s death kicks off an investigation into the three teenagers who were partying with her that night\, each a suspect. Hannah\, a sweet girl with an unstable history. Jack\, the popular kid with a mean streak. Christopher\, an outsider desperate to fit in. Their parents\, each with motivations of their own\, only complicate the picture: they will do anything to protect their children\, even at the others’ expense. \nWith a brilliantly woven\, intricately crafted plot that gathers momentum on every page\, this is superb storytelling told in terse prose—a dynamic read that is both intensely gripping and deeply affecting. \nSTEPHEN AMIDON was born in Chicago and grew up on the East Coast. He lived in London for twelve years before returning to the United States in 1999. He now lives in Massachusetts and Torino\, Italy. His books have been published in sixteen countries and include two works of non fiction\, a collection of short stories\, and seven novels\, including Human Capital\, adapted as a film directed by Marc Meyers in 2019\, and Security\, also adapted as a film and released by Netflix in summer 2021.

SUMMARY:"Unlike Any Other" Author Event with Ed Londergan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an enlightening talk and book signing event with author Ed Londergan for his latest historical fiction novel about Bathsheba Spooner entitled “Unlike Any Other“\, the story of an 18th Century woman from a prominent New England family who went from a life of privilege to the gallows. Signed copies will be available for purchase. \nBathsheba Spooner was the daughter of Timothy Ruggles\, a general in the French and Indian War\, president of the Stamp Act Congress\, Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas\, and a leading loyalist in Massachusetts during the Revolutionary War; the epitome of upper class. \nLike her father\, Bathsheba was smart\, strong-willed\, and a staunch British loyalist. Forced to marry a man she did not love\, Bathsheba withstood her husband’s abuse for years until a young Continental soldier entered her life. But when this well-heeled mother of three small children discovered she was pregnant with the soldier’s child\, her thoughts quickly turned to murder. \nBased on a true story\, the events that follow Bathsheba’s life\, her decisions\, and her ultimate demise will show readers that Bathsheba Spooner was\, in fact\, Unlike Any Other . . . \n  \n \nEd Londergan is the author of the award-winning books The Devils’ Elbow and The Long Journey Home. Having researched American history for many years\, he is a frequent speaker with a focus on colonial Massachusetts. A graduate of Holy Cross\, he lives in Warren\, Massachusetts.
