SUMMARY:Gargoyles and Graveyards: B&W Photography Exhibit by Paul Szlosek
DESCRIPTION:Stop by October 1st-31st to view the black & white photography of poet and artist Paul Szlosek. \nA meet the artist reception including an open mic poetry reading will take place on Saturday\, October 26th from 1-4 p.m. For more information call 508-949-6232. \nPaul Szlosek is an artist\, magician\, poet\, blogger\, and photographer born in Southbridge\, Massachusetts\, but currently residing in Worcester. He was a founder and host of the popular Poet’s Parlor poetry venue for over 13 years\, and has recently started a brand new open mic and featured poet reading series (with Ron Whittle) in Southbridge called The Poetorium at Starlite. His daily photo blog can be viewed HERE. \nArtist’s Statement: Since I first took a photograph of a cement bulldog with wings dripping a steady stream of water from his jaws along the roadside in Sturbridge in 2013\, I have become fascinated with this strange parallel world of fantastical creatures that exists along side ours\, but we seldom notice: gargoyles lurking in our architecture\, marble angels weeping in our cemeteries\, and fairies frolicking on our front lawns. With my digital camera\, I have sought to capture these strange and striking statuary throughout New England\, and share them with the rest of the globe on my daily photo blog Gargoyles and Grotesques :Don’t Look Up! Something May Be Watching You…\, posting over 2000 such images there through the years. Although the digital images are originally in color\, I have made the artistic choice of draining them of all hue\, feeling B&W is the perfect medium for the subject matter. To misquote a popular Paul Simon song\, monochrome “makes you think all the world’s a gloomy day” and  everything looks weirder in black and white.” This exhibit “Gargoyles and Graveyards” is just a small sampling of these photographs\, but I hope they will be your portal into this eerie yet tender otherworldly universe.

SUMMARY:In Pieces – Photographic Works by Lora Brueck
DESCRIPTION:Ships of Galilee by Lora Brueck\n“In Pieces” combines photography and paper crafts to create unique two-dimensional photographic works.  The artworks are made in a grid configuration using individual collaged photographs bordered by unique papers in quilt-like patterns.  The grids are united by theme\, color\, or shape to tell a story.  The paper borders serve as frames both containing and expanding on the grid images. \nIn the world of digital photography\, where it is possible to create hundreds of images in one shooting session\, a single perfect image\, matted and framed\, may not tell the whole story.  The collaged works in this show delve deeper into a site or event to create a totally new work combining shapes and colors of related\, or in some cases\, unrelated subjects.

SUMMARY:Artist Reception for "In Pieces"
DESCRIPTION:Afterglow by Lora Brueck\nMeet and greet with artist/photographer Lora Brueck. \nLight refreshments will be served. Free and open to the public. \nArtist’s Bio \nWith almost 30 years of photography behind me\, I have seen and enjoyed many photographic processes from black and white film to digital.  In the early 1990s\, I began using infrared film and hand-coloring my infrared images\, creating and exhibiting series including classic cars and carnival rides. In 1995\, I was introduced to making artists’ books\, individual books which use collage\, photography\, printing and other techniques. This allowed me to use my photography in ways other than matting and framing.  Creating artists books challenged me to sequence images to tell a story\, paying particular attention to form and craftsmanship \nIn moving from film to digital photography\, I began exploring mixed media and collage\, using my own photographic images as points of departure. What I find intriguing about collage is combining images and materials from different sources and contexts to create new pieces with a new meanings. I enjoy the craft aspect of decorating  paper\, using paste and various printing techniques.  I have combined these techniques along with my photography in this show “In Pieces.” \nI have exhibited my work in solo and group shows since the 1980s.  As a member of the Sunday Photography Group\, ARTXII\, the Boston Book Arts\, and f8\, I have participated in collaborative and collective exhibitions in the Worcester area.

SUMMARY:March Art Exhibit - The Curious Life of Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:The Curious Life of Pollinators by Nature’s Perspective Photography will be on view March 3rd-21st. \nA meet the artist reception will take place on Saturday\, March 14th from 2-4 p.m. \nFree and open to the public during regular business hours: Tue-Fri 10-6:30\, Sat 10-5. \nNature’s Perspective Photography started when photographer Nicole Giles began raising Monarch Butterfly Caterpillars in 2017. The hobby grew and in 2018\, Nicole released 271 tagged butterflies\, with almost 200 more in 2019. Her interest continued to expand\, learning about Black Swallowtails\, Red Admirals\, Spicebush Swallowtails\, and Promethea Silkmoths. Through craft fairs\, library displays\, and social media posts\, Nicole is opening eyes to the curious life of pollinators and the need for conservation.  Follow Nicole on Instagram at @naturesperspectivephotos to join her on an endless search for the perfect photos of new and different butterfly species.

SUMMARY:Flower Portraits Photo Show
DESCRIPTION:Rudbeckia by Don McCallister\nHaving recently learned techniques of portraiture photography\, Don McCallister realized that our gardens held a slew of potential subjects. Each perennial had its own personality. Some flamboyant; some demure. Some ornate; some simple. But all worthy of a portrait that stands on its own as an individual. \nYou may come in to view his work by appointment by calling 508-949-6232. \n  \nFor a video of Don talking about his work go HERE.

SUMMARY:BIBELOTS: SMALL OBJECTS OF CURIOSITY from Judith Ferrara
DESCRIPTION:City Tree by Judith Ferrara\nFor the month of July\, Bibelots\, a series of drawings by Worcester artist and poet Judith Ferrara\, will be on view and for sale in our cafe. \nStop in anytime during regular business hours to check it out! Free and open to the public with safety protocols in place. Masks must be worn\, no more than 12 people in the store at any one time. Tue-Fri 10-5\, Sat 10-4 \nTo view a special interview with the artist\, go HERE. \nThe Bibelot series is the fourth iteration of a meditative drawing technique called the Zentangle Method that Judith learned in a May 2009 workshop. Each series has had its own life\, but its DNA is in drawing free-form patterns. Every Bibelot is an evocative abstract composition\, bursting with shapes that dance\, collide and come to rest in a harmonious\, complex design. \nFor more information\, visit Judith’s website HERE. \n  \nArtist’s statement: \nThe exhibit concept and title came from a poem\, “Poor light\,” by Mark Waldron\, published in the October 2017 issue of Poetry. It is an ode to poor light. When Waldron used the word “bibelots” to describe eyes\, it sent me flying to a dictionary to appreciate exactly how perfect a word it is – “bibelot: a small object of curiosity\, beauty\, or rarity” (The Random House Dictionary). \nSomething else struck me. That was precisely what I had been creating for the past two years! Small – In 2016\, I had decided to reduce my series size from 8” squares to 6”.  Object – because of the 2” cradle\, each piece mimics a box. Curiosity – intricate abstract patterns draw viewers close\, as they try to figure out the shapes. Beauty – even though I believe each one is\, I offer viewers 31 bibelots to decide.  Rarity – that’s the one-of-a-kind nature of most art.

SUMMARY:September Art Exhibit – We Shall Overcome\, Artwork by John and Pam Redick
DESCRIPTION:Shoreline by John Redick\nTo view a video interview with the artists go HERE. \n2020 has been a year of challenges. We have all had to fight and avoid the Corona Virus and contend with the consequences of doing so\, respond to systemic racism and face the election of our lives in which it seems everyone feels that if the other side wins it will be the end of our democracy. \nWe have both had paintings in shows this year that were impossible to see because they were in lockdown and Pam had to adapt to more visual problems. In response to these changing times we hope that this show will take place\, that art is still a good way to react to the events of the day and that we shall overcome all of this someday. \nSPECIAL LOCAL BUSINESS & PANDEMIC SALE!! 20% OFF THIS SHOW ONLY!! \nEnchanted Web by Pam Redick

SUMMARY:“It’s Never Too Late”-March Art Show
DESCRIPTION:Stop in to view this month’s featured artist\, on view March 2nd-31st during regular business hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10-5. \nView a video interview with the artist HERE. \nHello! My name is Meg Harrison Young. \nThis is my first exhibit. After graduate school I worked for 25 years as an Art Therapist with mentally ill adults. In the almost decade since\, I’ve been a mental health counselor. Over the years\, art making was a hobby\, with long stretches of time when materials lay idle and dusty. \nIn January 2020\, my terminally- ill twin\, Martha\, could no longer care for herself\, and so moved in with my husband and me. Soon thereafter\, Covid made sheltering in place another challenge. \nMartha had art school training\, and over the years had exhibited her work on occasion. Making art again would become a self-therapy and an activity we could share. And then\, she passed in November. \nThe opportunity to exhibit at Booklovers’ Gourmet seemed an excellent way to first and finally show together.

SUMMARY:Water-The Stuff of Life\, Photography Show & Sale
DESCRIPTION:“Sunrise Water” by Don McCallister\n“Water – The Stuff of Life”\, photography by Don McCallister\, will be on display and for sale May 1st-29th\, 2021 during regular business hours: \nTuesday-Saturday 10-5. Please note: We will be closed for vacation May 11th-13th. \nFor more information call 508-949-6232 or email deb@bookloversgourmet.com \nWatch a short interview with the artist HERE. \n  \n  \nArtist’s Statement: \nYears ago I read the book “The Immense Journey” by naturalist Loren Eisley. In it he wrote “If there is magic on this planet\, it is contained in water”.  It was also around this time that I began my own forty plus year journey as a photographer and I did not realize how often water would be a key element in my images. In reviewing my archives this past winter\, the idea of building a collection based upon the theme of water took hold. Memories of some of my favorite images came back and I dug through boxes of old Kodachrome slides to find some of these pictures. Melding the old and the new resulted in dozens of candidates that I whittled down to this final collection. Looking forward and back\, I hope these images inspire people to look for beauty in our natural world and in that most common of everyday things\, water.
