I grew up in Swampscott\, MA\, an oceanside community north of Boston.  Professionally\, I have worked as an RN and a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner for 45 years.  I had a few courses in art as a teen and took 2 courses at Montserrat School of Art in Beverly\, MA in pastels and watercolors with artist/teacher\, Mimi Johnson. Retiring in 2016\, I have had the time to pursue my interests in art\, music\, dance and photography.  \nMany of the paintings that I create are based on my photographs or the photographs by friends with their permission.  Artist\, Elaine Griffith\, (now\, Artist\, Janice Legare ) taught classes at Holden Senior Center in acrylic painting which I started in October 2017.  Since then\, I have exhibited in various places in Central MA. I started Art Classes with Bill Griffiths at the Worcester Art Museum in 2018\, which brought me to a new level as an artist.  He has taught in all mediums and students work in the medium of their choosing.  I have exhibited at the Museum’s Adult Student Art Exhibit and at Arts Worcester.  In 2018\, I started watercolor classes with Charlie Grey in Rutland\, MA.\, a local well-known artist who has been instrumental in improving my watercolor technique. In July 2021. I participated in an intense workshop under the direction of Artists Mimi Johnson and Mark Hayden in multiple art forms. I am also a musician and singer and have sung in choruses and churches in Greater Boston.  I studied voice with the late Pauline Maher of Lynn\, MA. The Pandemic in 2020 cut into my exhibition time.  Booklovers’ Gourmet in Webster\, MA. was my first exhibit of 2020 and in December 2021.  Recently\, I have exhibited at the Gale Free Library and 122 Diner in Holden\, and The Pearle L. Crawford Library in Dudley.

SUMMARY:"Walking About Webster" Photo Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:For the month of September\, we are happy to be hosting a photo exhibit by William “Bil” Gardiner entitled “Walking About Webster”. Bil walked about the town of Webster during the spring and summer of this year photographing around town looking for the parts that make up the whole in Webster.  \nThere will be a meet the artist reception on Saturday\, September 9th\, from 2-4 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. \nIn addition to viewing the show\, a contest will be held to try to guess the location of each of the photographs in the exhibit\, which were all taken somewhere in Webster. The person that accurately guesses the most locations will win one of the featured 12×12 inch photographs of their choice. \nViewing hours of the show are Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm\, Wednesday 10am-6pm\, closed Sunday & Monday. \nPlease note: the store will be closed for vacation September 3rd-8th. \n  \nArtist Bio: William “Bil” Gardiner is a portrait photographer and photographic artist from Worcester\, MA. \nBil has been a photographer most of his life\, getting his first camera from a bubblegum type vending machine when he was around 8 years old. \nFrom April 2012-13\, he embarked on a yearlong personal assignment “A Picture a Day\,” carrying his camera with him wherever he went\, producing one image every day for a year. Through this body of work\, a fellow artist noted that his work in this area resembled the Tibetan concept of Miksang\, or “Contemplative Eye.” In this way\, his work captures only segments of objects\, rather than the whole\, inviting the viewer to deeper contemplation. \nAs a result\, the photographer needs to slow down and take their time while “contemplating” how to create their image\, and the viewer has to take their time while trying to identify what it is they are looking at.

SUMMARY:October Art Show-Self-Care Through (Imperfect) Creative Expression by Tina Brinks
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to present the October Art Show-Self-Care Through (Imperfect) Creative Expression by our very own Tina Brinks! \nThe show is made up of pieces using different techniques\, materials and tools. The pieces express the artist’s interest at various moments in her life and making them helped her navigate her busy life. That is why the pieces are not for sale. They are made because it was enjoyable to do so and are expression of herself. The pieces are also an invitation to try out\, to let go of control\, to get inspired\, to play\, to get curious and to ask questions. She hopes the viewer will find inspiration to explore. And since she works at the bookstore\, she is available for any conversation you would like to have regarding the show during regular business hours. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTina has called Webster home since 2002 and after taking care of her family she now works part time at Booklovers’ Gourmet. This is her first art show\, and it shows an overview of different tools\, techniques and materials used to explore\, create and play. For her\, creating is first and foremost a process that connects the heart\, hand and head and results in a sense of calmness and peace. Especially color\, sound and movement are areas of interest. She is always learning and loves to read and hear about different artists\, art styles and their creative process. These resources are very inspiring for her and have expanded her horizon in many\, many ways.  \n \n  \nShe learned to knit\, crochet and embroider at a young age from her mother and grandmother and was later on blessed with a very creative mother-in-law as well. She was encouraged to try out new things and enjoy the process of making.

SUMMARY:January Photo Exhibit-"Shades of Winter" by Don McCallister
DESCRIPTION:Birch and Ice\n“Shades of Winter” by Don McCallister will be on view and for sale January 9th-31st\, 2024 in our cafe gallery. \nA meet the artist reception will take place on Saturday\, January 27th from 1-3 p.m. Free and open to the public. \nViewing hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10-5\, Wednesday 10-6. \nFor more information\, call 508-949-6232 or email deb@bookloversgourmet.com. \n  \n“New Englanders might think that the winter season lacks color.  Some people call winter “the stick season”.  But like so many things in our wonderful local environment\, it pays to look beyond the obvious.  Casting a discerning eye at our local woods\, fields\, streams\, and ponds will reveal the subtle shapes\, textures\, and\, yes\, colors.  Sights that would be hidden during our spring\, summer\, and fall.  The essence of photography has always been to share the vision of the photographer.  This collection attempts to capture the unique winter details that were revealed to this photographer in his cold weather rambles. Hopefully\, this collection will inspire you to do your own winter explorations.”

SUMMARY:March Photo Exhibit-The Beauty of Nature by Gail Alexander
DESCRIPTION:The Beauty of Nature by Gail Alexander will be featured at Booklovers’ Gourmet from March 1st-30th in the cafe gallery.\nThe exhibit is free and open to the public during regular business hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10-5\, Wednesday 10-6\, closed Sunday and Monday.\n \nA meet the artist reception including light refreshments will take place on Saturday\, March 9th\, 2-4 p.m.\n\n \nAbout the artist:\n \nGail is a life long resident of Dudley. She graduated from Nichols College with a bachelor’s degree in business and has spent her career at a large local company. She has always had a love of animals and enjoys spending time with and around them. She spent many years showing her Thoroughbred horse\, AliBaba\, in the dressage arena\, even once qualifying and showing at the regional championships in New York.  She also spent time training and competing her two Olde English Bulldogges\, Apple and Nikita\, in the sport of Nosework (think police dogs trained to sniff out drugs\, except instead of sniffing out drugs\, her dogs sniffed out specific odors). Both she and her dogs have won many titles in the sport.\n \nUpon the passing of her beloved horse\, she found herself with lots of time on her hands and in need of a new hobby so she picked up a camera and has been hooked ever since. She would take her dogs hiking with the camera in tow. When the dogs became physically unable to hike with her\, she would head out by herself whenever and wherever it struck her fancy. That is where she really learned to appreciate nature and all its beauty. She is drawn to water\, so many of her photographs are around rivers or oceans or ponds and has a special spot in her heart for raptors; but loves photographing all kinds of birds and animals\, and anything else that catches her eye.Nowadays\, it is not unusual to find her out and about with some friends or spending time with her two granddaughters on “adventures”\, always with a camera in tow.Her work has been displayed in a juried show titled “The F-Stops Here” at Hygienic Gallery in New London\, CT. Most recently five pieces of her work were displayed at Workspace Gallery in Manchester\, CT in their “Perspectives of Time” show. She has since become a member of the gallery and later in 2024\, more of her work will be on display and for sale at the gallery as well.“It wasn’t until I started taking pictures that I began to realize that there is great beauty in everything around us. Life gets so busy and we run from place to place or task to task\, that we often don’t notice the little things right in front of us – like the quirkiness of the birds at the feeder or how majestic the eagle is soaring overhead. Photography has taught me to slow down and enjoy what is right in front of me.”

SUMMARY:“Wondrous Water”\, Paintings by Anne M. Tisdell
DESCRIPTION:Raft of Sea Otters by Anne Tisdell\nCome view this month’s featured art show by Anne Tisdell\, of Webster\, on display in the cafe gallery July 2nd-31st. \n“Wondrous Water” – This is a substance on which all living things must have in order to live. Without it all animals and plants would wither and die. What is it made of? Two hydrogen atoms with one oxygen atom = H2O. \nIt has many personalities. It can freeze and be the surface for ice skating and hockey or a horror\, freezing our roads and adhering to trees and power wires causing outages and traffic accidents.  In its liquid form\, marine life frolic in rivers\, lakes and oceans with swimming\, surfing and so forth with humans doing many different activities as well. It hydrates us to drink. In its gaseous form\, steam can power locomotives\, machinery\, and industry. It can be harnessed at dams for electrical energy. \nAll creatures need it as a medium for propelling blood flow thru our systems to deliver oxygen and nutrients on a cellular level\, in addition\, to bringing waste products to organs of excretion.  Temperature regulation of organisms rely on it\, otherwise\, we would overheat and die from heat exhaustion. \nAs a child growing up on the ocean\, I witnessed the powerful majesty of the crashing waves that looked like white chariots pulled by galloping magnificent stallions sailing into the air poised in an explosive display of power and beauty. Curiosity and awe urged me closer. Dad had me at a safe distance. We have all seen catastrophic damage from flooding caused by hurricanes and nor’easters as testament to water’s power and fury. \nIn contrast\, there is the grounding scenic view of the seashore on a bright sunny day that provides calming reflections for the mind. We live on the “Blue Planet”\, which is 75% water. Humans are responsible for chemical contaminants that can pollute our water resources.  Let us all be mindful of keeping our planet clean for generations to come\, for all living creatures!  Anne Tisdell 5-31-24 \nArtist’s Statement: \nI have dabbled in art all my life with sketching and drawing. I grew up in Swampscott\, MA.\, an oceanside community north of Boston. Artist\, Elaine Griffith\, (now\, Artist\, Janice Legare) taught classes at Holden Senior Center in acrylic painting which I started in October 2017.  Since then\, I have exhibited in various places in Central MA. I started Art Classes with Bill Griffiths at the Worcester Art Museum in 2018\, which brought me to a new level as an artist.  I have exhibited at the Museum’s Adult Student Art Exhibit and at Arts Worcester.  In 2018\, I started watercolor classes with Charlie Gray in Rutland\, MA\, a local well-known artist who has been instrumental in improving my watercolor technique. In July 2021\, I participated in an intense workshop under the direction of Artists Mimi Johnson and Mark Hayden in multiple art forms. The Summer of 2023\, I enrolled at Worcester Art Museum to learn more techniques with portraiture. Recently\, I have exhibited at the Gale Free Library and 122 Diner in Holden\, Pearle L. Crawford Library in Dudley\, Booklovers’ Gourmet in Webster\, Jacob Edwards Library in Southbridge\, Shrewsbury Public Library as well as The Princeton Art Society\, Northborough Art Guild.
