SUMMARY:Healing Wisdom of Dreams author event with Kathleen Webster O'Malley
DESCRIPTION:Come meet Kathleen Webster O’Malley\, author of The Healing Wisdom of Dreams\, published in October 2022 by Hay House\, Inc. \nThe event is free and open to the public. For more information call 508-949-6232 or email deb@bookloversgourmet.com. \nSigned copies will be available for purchase and may also be pre-ordered by contacting the store. \nAbout The Healing Wisdom of Dreams\nA guide to trusting in the wisdom of our nightly visions and describing how engaging with our dream world can give us a sense of direction\, help us to heal current and past hurts\, including pre-birth trauma. \nWe can analyze and interpret our dreams\, but we can do so much more: when we understand and engage with our dreams\, we are able to tap into a special\, deeper kind of healing. The process of healing is not about putting the same pieces back together; rather\, it is about reclaiming what is already within us that could never be broken\, the essence of who we are as individuals and as interconnected parts of a greater whole. In THE HEALING WISDOM OF DREAMS\, health and wellness practitioner Kathleen Webster O’Malley gently guides us through the process of using our dreams to heal unwanted patterns and live more authentically. \nShe provides specific tools for enhancing dream recall\, including dream journaling\, and brings in the practices of dream incubation–how to ask our dream a question and receive and interpret an answer–lucid dreaming\, and Tibetan dream yoga practices. Nightmares are inevitable when we start to dive deeper into our vulnerabilities and traumas\, and O’Malley discusses how to re-vision them as urgent messages that serve to deliver profound realizations. She explores the more mystical side of dreaming: visions from ancestors and spirit guides\, animal guides\, and archetypes that appear in our dreams. Finally\, she encourages us to grant ourselves permission to be playful in our dreams\, to envision ourselves as archeologists unearthing our hidden gifts. \n  \nKathleen Webster O’Malley serves as a health and wellness practitioner\, combining more than 20 years of chiropractic with other healing modalities that emphasize alignment to the body’s inherent wisdom. A dream enthusiast since childhood\, she encourages her patients and wellness clients to look to their dreams as a source of guidance\, inspiration\, and healing. She is a 2020 recipient of the Visioneers Personal Achievement Award for her contributions to community well-being. The Visioneers is a global community of change-makers. Kathleen’s mission is to inspire greater compassion and encourage others to align with their innermost wisdom to live with greater integrity\, intention\, and purpose. Kathleen grew up in the Caribbean\, among three island nations and currently makes her home in central Massachusetts. SUMMARY:Curt Curtin Releases New Poetry Collection for Older Children
DESCRIPTION:Curt Curtin and his wife\, Dee O’Connor\, will read from his latest collection\, So Much Depends On Where You Live\, which is both playful and deeply serious. Targeted to young readers in their teens and tweens\, the collection includes the “wit\, inventive rhyme schemes\, and fun wordplay” that characterized his previous collection for younger children\, but this new work includes challenging subject matter more appropriate for older children. The opening section entices the reader with images of home\, presenting warm memories in a diversity of settings ranging from a nine-story apartment to a mud hut in the Sahel. The second section moves the reader inward through metaphors of closets and themes of loss\, bullying\, domestic violence and foster care. The final section zooms out to take in the universe\, lightening the mood again with images from earth and beyond.  \nA brief open mic will start at 2 p.m. followed by the featured reading. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. A bilingual selection of the poems (Spanish and English) is currently in development for distribution within schools and other settings. Teen and pre-teen readers are highly encouraged to attend. \nFor more information or to reserve a seat or sign up for the open mic (space is limited)\, call 508-949-6232 or email deb@bookloversgourmet.com. \nCurtin has won several awards for poetry including the Worcester County Poetry Association’s Frank O’Hara Award (2010) and the Connecticut Poetry Society’s annual contest (2019). He has twice been named a Pushcart Prize nominee. His poetry has been published in a variety of journals and anthologies\, three chapbooks and three other full-length poetry collections. \nFor more information about the author\, visit curtcurtinpoet.com

SUMMARY:Winners from Writers of the Future #38 Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a fun\, free virtual event featuring five winners of this year’s Writers of the Future Vol. 38\, the best new writers & illustrators in the sci-fi/fantasy genre as chosen by top pros in the field including Frank Herbert\, Kevin J. Anderson & Diane Dillon! Hear them read\, talk about their inspiration\, background and road to success. \nOrder the book at a 10% discount HERE or pick up in store. \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcscOGqqDsiHNVmV04VcIYjAf4oE_uvoSyJ \n \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.\n  \n  \nHere’s a rundown of our special guests: \n \nMike Jack Stoumbos is a spec-fic author\, disguised as a believably normal teacher\, living with his wife and their parrot. Mike grew up with three brothers and over forty first cousins\, who he enlisted as test audiences (and participants) for his imagined adventures\, often reenacted with cardboard props or Star Wars action figures. His love of storytelling brought him to the stage as a musical theater actor\, the role-playing table as a game master\, and a career trajectory to teach English and theater. In the summer of 2019\, however\, Mike shifted his writing passion into a priority\, and once again became a student: attending workshops\, practicing daily\, and braving the story submission gauntlet. Mike’s work has since appeared in several collections\, including his first pro sale in Galactic Stew and a publication alongside a personal hero in Hold Your Fire: Stories Celebrating the Creative Spark. Shortly after he was named a Writers of the Future winner\, Mike’s space-opera series\, This Fine Crew\, was picked up by Chris Kennedy Publishing\, for many continuing adventures. The idea for “The Squid Is My Brother” emerged as a curiosity: how to take something from cosmic horror and make it as endearing as a family member. Even more importantly\, Mike wrote this story shortly after the schools had closed due to COVID in 2020 as a young student’s first-person account of transferring into a bizarre new environment\, fearing the unknown\, and learning about humanity. \nRebecca E. Treasure grew up reading science fiction and fantasy in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. After grad school and two children\, she began writing fiction. Rebecca has lived many places\, including the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and Tokyo\, Japan. She currently resides in Texas Hill Country with her husband\, where she juggles two children\, two corgis\, a violin studio\, and writing. She only drops the children occasionally. Rebecca discovered Writers of the Future shortly after she began writing fiction. She has entered every quarter since\, making lifelong friends as a result. Rebecca’s short fiction has been published by or is forthcoming from WordFire Press\, Air and Nothingness Press\, Flame Tree Publishing\, The Dread Machine\, and others. She is an associate editor at Apex Book Company and Magazine. “Tsuu\, Tsuu\, Kasva Suuremasse” came about\, as many of Rebecca’s stories have\, from a synthesis of ideas. Research for her sixth novel\, a historical fantasy about Napoleonic magic users\, combined with a fascination with the idea of animal magic and beloved memories of an “adopted” grandmother from her childhood. The real Emily lived in a cozy apartment across from Rebecca’s family and collected dolls. \nJim Zaccaria was born and raised in East Boston. Jim has worked varied jobs in graphic design—first as a printer\, then a print buyer\, and then as a graphic designer specializing in book cover design. His work has won acclaim from Bookbuilders of Boston\, The New York Book Show\, and the Boskone Art Show. Also\, his work has appeared in the annuals from Bookbuilders of Boston and Infected by Art. Much of his daily work is book cover design for publishers and independent authors\, though he feels the pull toward image creation. Over the last several years\, he has started to build his portfolio and exhibit at various conventions\, squeezing in new art every chance he gets. Jim has been drawn to the arts from an early age. Music is an immense inspiration for ideas\, and much of his work is influenced by a song title\, lyric\, or mood. Other subjects that motivate and spark his imagination are mythology\, poster design\, and artists working in imaginative realism. Most of his art is produced digitally\, and he sees that as a perfect medium for commercial works\, but he also enjoys working in traditional methods as well as a blending of the two. \n \n  \nNatalia Salvador was born in 1985 in Granada\, in the south of Spain. She grew up reading\, watching adventure films\, and playing classic adventure video games that inspired her drawings. She always liked art and admired book covers and interior illustrations\, so it wasn’t surprising when she decided to approach that world by studying fine arts and graphic design. Her mother always encouraged her and was the one who gave her the final push to pursue a career in illustration. Influenced by fantasy art and the Golden Age of illustration\, she enjoys creating beautiful images that tell a story. \n  \nGrowing up in Jamaica\, Michael Talbot had always had a strong desire to inspire and speak to others through art. In 2012 he left his home country to live in the United States and began pursuing his artistic dreams. He earned his BFA in Illustration and Graphic Design with a minor in Animation at Lesley University in Cambridge\, MA\, and has since been working as a Boston-based Freelance Artist on a wide range of projects\, exhibitions\, and showcases. Michael believes that all art is inter-connected in some facet; informing\, complimenting and/or enhancing each other. And although his passion and interest for storytelling is forefront in his practice and craft\, he tends to draw from his knowledge in as many areas of study as possible to help strengthen this process. Whenever possible\, he uses his rich cultural background from his early life in Jamaica to infuse\, improve\, and “season” whatever project he tackles\, often mixing both digital and traditional media.

With Shuntoll Hill\, the latest in the series\, Boston library curator Kathryn Stinson returns to the Berkshires\, hoping to rebuild her romance with Earl Barker\, but ends up battling a New York developer\, determined to turn the property she’s been renting into an upscale development. Kathryn’s search for \nanswers leads her to other questions about the developer’s connection to a friend of hers who fled New York years ago for mysterious reasons. The information she uncovers puts her in grave danger.\n \nSharon Healy-Yang is an aficionado of 1940s cinematic and written mysteries. A professor emerita at Worcester State University in Massachusetts\, where she was known for her 1940s \nhats\, she had the great fortune to share her love of literature and film with her students in her courses. Now retired\, she’s excited to recapture for readers the smart-talking heroines\, suspense\, adventure\, and sharp wit of 1940s films in her Jessica Minton Mystery series: Bait and Switch\, Letter from a Dead Man\, and Always Play the Dark Horse. Once again diving into the perspective of Jessica Minton\, Always Play the Dark Horse shows a gradual but significant transformation in this main character; Healy-Yang describes the newly engaged Jessica Minton in the third book of the Jessica Minton Mystery series as someone who has transformed from the strong woman who felt she had to prove herself to the strong woman who is confident in having proved herself.\n

SUMMARY:Earthsongs Book Release Party
DESCRIPTION:“Earthsongs” illustrations by Ferol Smith\n\nJoin us as we celebrate Earth Day with “Earthsongs”\, a new book of poetry & art featuring a collaboration between friends Robert Eugene Perry & Ferol Smith.\n \nSigned copies will be available for purchase that day.\n \nPoet Statement:\nThis collaboration with my artist friend Ferol was absolutely a labor of love. In discussing the sketches that would accompany the poems\, she intuitively grasped the meaning of the words and translated them into sublime images. She needed very little direction from me.\nIt was almost as if the synchronicity of the project was palpable to both of us. Her sketches added a new dimension to my own perception of my poems. This has been one of the most rewarding artistic experiences of my life.\n \n \nArtist Statement:\nWhen Bob first approached me about this project\, I was intrigued. Normally\, my art requires creatively rendering a visual scene. For this project\, it would involve interpreting the written word.\nAt first\, it was a challenge to read a poem and conceptualize a complementary nature scene. However\, once I started to really grasp the essence of his words\, the process became much easier. His poems inspired me to reach within\, and as a result I gained a deeper appreciation and understanding of his work.

His oil paintings are remarkably rich and realistic and bring to life the subjects of his books—be they bugs\, flags\, dinosaurs\, or well-hidden messages and secret drawings. \nA graduate of Rhode Island School of Design\, Ralph has produced numerous works of fine art for galleries in addition to picture book illustrations and magazine covers for Omni and Tennis. He is twice the recipient of the Society of Illustrators Certificate of Merit. But it is his visits with school children that give him the most satisfaction. “Adults are very subdued. They say\, ‘Isn’t that lovely?’ But children will go\, ‘That’s so cool\, dude!’ That’s better than any award.” Along with discussing the technical aspects of book making\, Ralph tells his audience about his own education\, stressing reading and library skills as they relate to the research and development of an accurately illustrated book. Audience participation and spontaneity is highly emphasized and always leads to boisterous\, but stimulating and educational\, fun for kids. For years\, children have benefited from visits from ‘The Icky Bug Man.’

SUMMARY:"Always Play the Dark Horse" mystery author event
DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming back Sharon Healy-Yang\, author of a new film noir mystery Always Play the Dark Horse\, the third installment of her Jessica Minton Mystery series. Once again diving into the perspective of Jessica Minton\, Always Play the Dark Horse shows a gradual but significant transformation in this main character; Healy-Yang describes the newly engaged Jessica Minton as someone who has transformed from the strong woman who felt she had to prove herself to the strong woman who is confident in having proved herself. \nHealy-Yang finds mystery narratives as the best format to imagine contemporarily written film noir worlds\, as the genre regularly proves itself particularly adept at moving readers into dreamy and shadowy new worlds with sharp twists and turns. Always Play the Dark Horse returns to these aesthetics as Healy-Yang once again brings the magic of film to the page for all mystery-book lovers. \n \n  \nAbout the author: Sharon Healy-Yang is an aficionado of 1940s cinematic and written mysteries. A professor emerita at Worcester State University in Massachusetts\, where she was known for her 1940s hats\, she had the great fortune to share her love of literature and film with her students in her courses.

SUMMARY:Four States of Abuse book signing & talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a book signing and talk with Dorothy Cooper-Browne\, author of “Four States of Abuse” \nRSVP to deb@bookloversgourmet.com or 508-949-6232. Masks are required for anyone not vaccinated. \nAbout the Book \n“Four States of Abuse” is my personal journey of experiencing abuse from my childhood to adulthood. I did not know that I was being abused at times\, but it was abuse\, mental and physical. I was born in the south. Sheltered from society. Taught to not question adults. \nAt a young age\, I found out that my mother did not want me and sent me to live with my Aunt and Uncle\, who did not have kids. It was here that I was closed off from the world\, sheltered from society. I was made to follow commands without question or hesitation. \nBeing an only child\, my sense of innocence was not exposed to life and I took everything at face value. There was no one really there to educate me about the way life should be. \nThrough my story\, I hope to inspire people to get out of their situations and seek help. \nBio \nDorothy Cooper-Browne wants to help other people by sharing her harrowing story of abuse. While she did not know at the time that she was being abused\, she survived mental and physical mistreatment. Growing up\, Dorothy thought she would be a nun\, so she never smoked\, never drank\, and never did any drugs. To this day\, she is still living a clean lifestyle. Though she never had any idea what the future would hold for her\, she has always been on a journey to love herself unconditionally. With her sons’ encouragement\, she finally decided to pen her story. \nIn her downtime\, Dorothy loves to read\, spends quiet moments working on puzzles—everything from crosswords to Jigsaws—and enjoys dancing and singing. With an impressive forty-two years in the banking industry\, she is proud of her achievements. She hopes to inspire others who are caught in abusive situations to escape and seek help. There is no shame in starting over and she believes everyone has the right to be happy\, safe\, and loved for their true selves… even if they can’t see that.

SUMMARY:Abandoned Massachusetts author talk & signing
DESCRIPTION:Meet and greet with David Whitemyer\, author of the new book Abandoned Massachusetts: Lost Treasures of the Bay State. Call 508-949-6232 or email deb@bookloversgourmet.com for more information or to RSVP attendance. Space is limited due to COVID-19 restrictions. \nAbout the book: \nFrom the Mayflower Pilgrims and the founding of Plymouth Colony to the high-tech firms and medical institutions surrounding Boston today\, the last 400 years in Massachusetts has seen growth\, prosperity\, war\, innovation\, and decline. Textiles\, shoemaking\, fishing\, and transportation engineering brought riches to cities and small towns. Echoing the pulse of America\, the only constant has been change. Many of the factories\, theaters\, churches\, and schools constructed during Massachusetts’ heyday have succumbed to the elements or were destroyed by development. Abandoned Massachusetts gives readers a glimpse into these once-thriving\, now-forsaken buildings. Follow photographer David Whitemyer as he steps back in time to an ornate theater that opened on the same day the Titanic sank\, to a factory that remained active from the Civil War through 2014\, to America’s oldest publicly funded institution for people with developmental disabilities\, and to dozens of other fascinating structures around the state. Few of these architectural treasures will ever be restored\, and most are gone forever.
